How much data does Elder Scrolls Online use?

It can be unnerving to play massively multiplayer online games like Elder Scrolls Online on a limited mobile hotspot or fixed mobile data internet connection. Luckily online games don’t actually use as much bandwidth as many people think. While you don’t need to keep track of every minute you spend on the game, you still might need to keep an eye on your data use.

Data usage when playing Elder Scrolls

Elder Scrolls Online uses between 20 and 80 MB of mobile data per hour. As there are about 1,000 MB in 1 GB, the game eats through data at a rate of 0.02 to 0.08 GB per hour. The rate varies based on your gaming system specifications and the number of players in the game.

How big is the Elder Scrolls download?

Platform File size
Microsoft Windows <85 GB
Mac OS <85 GB
Playstation 4 40 GB
Xbox One 10 MB

Download size is a compressed version of file size, so the download will be smaller. Archive formats used for downloads – like “.zip” or “.rar” – are about half of the unpacked file size.

How big are Elder Scrolls Online updates?

Elder Scrolls Online updates can be as large as 67 GB (Version 2.00), so it’s important to keep an eye on these if you have limited data. For the most up-to-date information on patches and hotfixes, see Elder Scrolls Online Forum. To keep these downloads from using too much data, turn off auto-updates in your game or console settings. Manual updates are easier to control.

How can you reduce your Elder Scrolls Online data use?

If you want to use less data while you play Elder Scrolls Online, you can:

Play game modes with fewer players or join emptier servers. The more players in a game, the more online data like chat text, player movement, and stats your local network has to share with other players. More intensive game modes, like an Alliance War in Cyrodiil, use more data.

Play Elder Scrolls Online without voice chat.  Another key point is that voice chat can use up to 60 MB of data per hour, so it isn’t great if you’re tight on data. To save data, you can restrict your voice chat to certain areas or specific players – or turn it off completely in your game or console settings.

Play on a slower server. Most game servers have a tick rate of either 64 or 128 Hz. A 64 tick server refreshes the game 64 times a second, or approximately once every 15 milliseconds. A 128 tick server syncs with clients 128 times a second or once every 8 milliseconds. It also uses about twice as much data. All in all, to save data, choose community servers with lower tick rates.

Limit your client update rate. Client update rate is how many times per second your computer can process the updates it gets from a game server. The real update rate of your game will be the lower of your server tick rate and client update rate. Another consideration would be to limit your client update rate in your settings to keep data use low when you’re playing on a game server with a high tick rate.

Get more data with fixed wireless internet

Want to play Elder Scrolls Online without worrying about using too much data? A fixed wireless internet connection with a high data cap is an ideal home Wi-Fi connection for rural gamers who don’t have access to wired internet connections like cable or fiber.
