How much internet data does MapleStory use

Playing a massively multiplayer game like MapleStory on a mobile data or fixed wireless internet connection can eat through your monthly data. Let’s take a closer look at how much data it takes to download, update, and play MapleStory on PC. Of course, the easiest way to game on a mobile data connection is to switch to unlimited fixed wireless internet without a monthly limit.

MapleStory download size

Platform File size
Microsoft Windows <20GB

While the download size won’t be as big as the unpacked file size listed above, it still takes a lot more data to download MapleStory than it does to play it. That’s because the initial download includes data like graphics that you only need to download once. Once the initial download is out of the way, you can adjust your graphic settings without having any effect on data use.

MapleStory updates and patches

The developer, Wizet, frequently releases updates and patches for MapleStory, which you can keep track of in the major game updates notes. Major patches are around 2 GB. If a major update or patch will push your data use over your monthly limit, turn off auto-updates and only manually install updates and patches when you know you have data available.

MapleStory data use

MapleStory usually uses around 10 MB of data per hour of gameplay, which is really low for a massively multiplayer online game. The exact amount of data you’ll end up using playing the game depends on the number of players in the game at that time, your frame rate, the tick rate of your server, and whether or not you simultaneously use a voice chat application:

  • The more players in the game, the more online data (e.g. chats, location, and stats) your local network has to share with these other players’ networks. While you don’t have much control over how many people are playing MapleStory at any given time, if you play when the game has less traffic, you’ll use less data.
  • A higher frame rate refreshes the game more often, which makes it run faster. A lower frame rate saves you data, but makes it harder for you to react quickly in the game. To use less data, lower your frame rate (measured in FPS) in your game settings. To change this setting, you’ll first need to disable vertical synch (V-Synch).
  • A 128 tick server, which refreshes the game 128 times every second, uses about twice as much data as a 64 tick server, which refreshes the game 64 times every second. To use less data, play on a 64 tick server when possible.
  • Voice chat apps use a lot of data. A Facetime Audio call, for example, uses up to 60 MB of data per hour of chat. MapleStory doesn’t have a native voice chat, but you’ll use more data if you simultaneously run an app like Facetime Audio or Zoom.
